The USA is extremely divided politically. However, the current polarization has grown historically and can be traced back over many years.
The Republicans in particular have moved significantly to the right in the last decade - reinforced by Donald Trump - much more than the Democrats have moved away from their ideological center. The current split between Democrats and Republicans is the widest in five decades.
