What Is the FERI Corporate Forest?
The FERI Corporate Forest is a long-term project we are implementing in cooperation with Planted and Forst Bad Homburg. Our goal is to support the development of forest areas through tree planting measures and, in doing so, promote the conditions for diverse local forest ecosystems.
Trees perform important ecological functions. Depending on the tree species, location and stage of development, they can, among other things, store carbon, contribute to the stabilization of water and soil systems, and provide habitats for various animal and plant species. At the same time, many German forests have been severely affected by climate change, droughts and pests.
Through the FERI Corporate Forest, we participate in reforestation and forest transformation measures that are aimed at the long-term development of resilient forest structures. Together with Planted, we plant regional and climate-resilient tree species that are selected according to local site conditions and planted in line with clearly defined planting standards. These include, for example:
- the selection of high-quality and climate-resilient saplings,
- planting during the appropriate season, and
- regular monitoring of the planted areas in order to closely support the development of the young trees.
In this way, a site-appropriate mixed forest with different tree species can develop over the long term.
What Characterizes a Site-appropriate and Structurally Diverse Mixed Forest?
Under suitable conditions, mixed forests can fulfil the following ecological functions, among others:
- contribute to the sequestration of CO₂ and the production of oxygen,
- filter and store water,
- provide habitats for numerous animal and plant species,
- help mitigate the effects of erosion, heat and extreme weather events, and
- serve as recreational spaces for people.
The functions described above depend, among other factors, on the tree
species, age, maintenance condition and the specific site characteristics
of the forest.
Why We Are Committed to Climate Action (SDG 13)
Climate change is one of the greatest global challenges of our time, affecting the economy, society and financial markets alike. As an investment house with a long-term focus, we see it as our responsibility to engage with climate-related topics and support relevant projects within the scope of our social commitment activities.
SDG 13 ("Climate Action") therefore represents a central focus of our commitment. We support selected climate-related projects, raise awareness of climate risks, and engage in measures aimed at climate action as well as the preservation and development of resilient forest ecosystems. Climate change affects numerous other sustainability goals, and climate action measures can therefore be an important building block in supporting progress towards these goals.
Diversification and Mixed Forests
Diversification plays a central role at FERI: risks are spread broadly in order to enable more stable long-term investment outcomes.
With the FERI Corporate Forest, we apply this principle as an analogy for our social commitment. Ecological diversity is also an important factor. In forestry, a mix of different tree species is often regarded as one building block in helping forests adapt to changing environmental conditions, such as drought, storms or pest infestations.
As part of the project, sessile oaks have been planted. They form part of a broader reforestation project in which different tree species are developed and maintained together. Below at "FERI's Digital Corporate Forest", you can gain deeper insights into our tree-planting initiative.
